Returns Without CRA Follow-up
"Before working with Rideau Sums, I would dread the annual filing. I had no idea what was on the return or whether anything had been missed. The pre-filing meeting changed that completely — I actually sat down, went through the numbers, and understood my tax position for the first time."
Sandra Chisholm
Owner, Chisholm Interiors · Dartmouth, NS · February 2026
"The HST side of my business had been a constant source of anxiety. I was never fully confident that I was claiming the right input tax credits or that my reconciliation was accurate. Gordon's team caught a categorization issue that had been sitting in my prior year filings — quite a relief once it was sorted out."
Marc Boucher
Director, Boucher Marine Supply · Truro, NS · March 2026
"What I appreciate most is the post-filing summary. After previous accountants, I would receive my return and have almost no context for the numbers. Rideau Sums sends a one-page summary that tells me my effective tax rate, my carry-forward amounts, and anything I should be thinking about. That is genuinely useful."
Laurel MacPherson
Principal, Tideline Consulting · Halifax, NS · January 2026
"We engaged Rideau Sums for the growth advisory service when our revenues crossed the two hundred thousand mark and we started looking at equipment purchases. The CCA timing guidance alone was worth the engagement fee. Thomas walked us through how the timing of a purchase interacted with our year-end, and we adjusted accordingly."
Patricia Doyle
Co-Owner, Doyle & Webb Fabrication · New Glasgow, NS · February 2026
"I incorporated my business two years ago and was immediately confused by the T2 requirements, the HST registration, and how my personal T1 now interacted with corporate income. Rideau Sums was patient and clear at every step. The flat fee also made it much easier to budget — no anxiety about how many questions I could ask."
Renée Noel
Owner, Noel Creative Studio · Halifax, NS · March 2026
"We had received a CRA notice about our prior year HST filing and were quite concerned. Rideau Sums reviewed the notice, explained what it was actually asking for, and helped us respond appropriately. It turned out to be a routine clarification request — but having someone who could read that correspondence calmly was genuinely helpful."

Challenge
HST Registration & First Year Filings
A Halifax retail business had recently crossed the HST registration threshold and had no prior experience with the filing process. The owner was uncertain about quarterly versus annual filing, place-of-supply rules for some online sales, and how to track input tax credits.
Our Approach
We walked through the registration process with the CRA, helped the owner select the appropriate filing frequency based on projected revenue, and provided a clear categorization framework for tracking eligible business expenses. We also reviewed their online sales structure for place-of-supply considerations.
The first quarterly returns were prepared with a detailed input tax credit review and filed electronically. A brief review meeting was held before each filing.
Results
- All four quarterly filings completed without CRA follow-up
- Prior year unclaimed ITCs identified and applied where permissible
- Owner confident managing their own HST tracking between filings
Duration: 12 months | Service: HST Compliance & Filing

First Incorporation Filing — T2 & T1 Together
A sole proprietor who had recently incorporated their Truro-based services business was facing their first T2 corporate return. They were unsure how to handle the split between corporate income, salary drawn, and dividends paid to themselves, and had received conflicting advice about the provincial small business deduction.
Our Approach
We prepared both the T2 and the client's personal T1 return as one coordinated engagement, running a salary-versus-dividend analysis to inform the approach for the current and future years. The Nova Scotia small business deduction was confirmed and applied.
A structured pre-filing meeting reviewed the completed returns side by side, and the post-filing summary documented the effective tax rate and the balance of the small business deduction limit for the next year.
Results
- T2 and T1 coordinated and filed without CRA queries
- NS small business deduction correctly applied to full eligible income
- Client understood salary vs. dividend implications for the year ahead

Growth Advisory — Equipment Acquisition Timing
A Bedford construction supply business with revenues around CAD 350,000 was planning a significant equipment purchase and wanted to understand how the timing of that acquisition would interact with their tax year-end and capital cost allowance schedules.
Our Approach
The first advisory session reviewed the full financial position of the business. We modelled two acquisition scenarios — before and after the fiscal year-end — and compared the first-year CCA claim, the undepreciated capital cost balance, and the net tax position under each.
We also identified an Atlantic Investment Tax Credit that could reduce the cost of the acquisition and outlined the documentation required to claim it.
Results
- Acquisition timed to maximise first-year CCA claim
- Atlantic Investment Tax Credit identified and documented
- Written strategy document updated to reflect new asset base
